Dr. Payal Mapara is a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 27035) who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, chronic health conditions, and stress management. She has extensive experience supporting individuals coping with chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, as well as those navigating substance use, life transitions, and communication challenges at work and at home. Dr. Mapara’s approach emphasizes understanding each person’s unique experiences and helping them build the tools to achieve greater balance, resilience, and well-being.

Her therapeutic approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based practices, and relational approaches. Dr. Mapara’s style is collaborative and compassionate, grounded in the belief that meaningful change is possible—even in the midst of stress. She views mental and physical health as deeply connected and shaped by life experiences and cultural context, and she is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for all clients.

Prior to joining Pacific Anxiety Group, Dr. Mapara served as a staff psychologist at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the UCSF School of Medicine. During her ten-year tenure, she trained doctoral-level psychologists, nurse practitioners, and medical residents in evidence-based therapy and psychological assessment.

Dr. Mapara earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Master’s degree in Psychology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Yeshiva University, with concentrations in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Geropsychology. She completed her clinical training at the Manhattan VA Hospital and San Francisco VA Hospital, specializing in Primary Care and Health Psychology.
