Kate Corcoran, Ph.D.

Dr. Kate Corcoran (PSY23955) is a clinical psychologist and founding partner of Pacific Anxiety Group in Menlo Park, California.  She is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she teaches and supervises graduate students, psychology fellows, and psychiatry residents in evidence-based psychotherapy.  She has published chapters and articles on supervision, mindfulness, anxiety, and depression and edited a book on best practices for supervision.  In addition, she has led numerous workshops on CBT and MBCT in California and Canada, and she has served as an advisor to mental health start-up companies.

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Corcoran specializes in evidence-based psychotherapy for adults experiencing anxiety, stress, and depression.  Her approach is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and draws on acceptance, mindfulness, and compassion-focused approaches.  She works collaboratively with clients to understand the patterns contributing to their difficulties and to develop an individualized plan that reflects each person’s goals, experiences, and needs.  Her style combines practical strategies for meaningful change with a thoughtful understanding of the emotional and interpersonal experiences that shape how people respond to challenges.

Areas of particular interest include anxiety and chronic worry, perfectionism and self-criticism, stress and burnout, depression, relationship and communication difficulties, work and professional challenges, and major life transitions.  Dr. Corcoran also has a growing interest in women’s mental health across the lifespan, including the psychological and emotional challenges that can accompany midlife, caregiving, changes in relationships and professional identity, and reproductive and hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause.

Academic and Professional Background

Prior to her role at Stanford, Dr. Corcoran was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and a psychologist in the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).  She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia, completed her internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine.
