Kim Chu, Psy.D.
Dr. Kim Chu is a licensed psychologist (PSY26832) with expertise in evidence-based treatments for adults with mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. She also specializes in the treatment of life transitions, multicultural issues, and minority populations. Dr. Chu has extensive training in evidence-based psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Positive Psychotherapy (PPT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Dr. Chu received her B.A. in Psychology from UC Berkeley, her M.A. in Counseling and Clinical Psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University, and her M.S. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium, the joint program between the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. During her doctoral program, Dr. Chu trained at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) Anxiety Clinic under the mentorship of Drs. Tamara Hartl and Kate Corcoran, the Stanford Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, and the Gronowski Center Shyness Clinic. Dr. Chu completed her pre-doctoral internship at the UC Santa Cruz Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and her post-doctoral fellowship at the Kaiser Permanente Department of Psychiatry in Redwood City where she further specialized in evidence-based treatments including CBT, DBT, and strength-based Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) treatments for individuals and groups.
Dr. Chu’s therapeutic approach emphasizes a warm, compassionate, and client-centered stance while integrating an empirical framework to help clients learn new skills to improve their functioning and quality of life. She provides a comfortable, non-judgmental, and supportive safe space for exploration and discussion of the client’s issues. She also emphasizes a strength-based approach to treatment in which clients build upon strengths and resiliency and use these positive qualities to overcome obstacles and attain personal growth.
